General Information
Goal of this seed money project is to develop a ‘main’ project focusing on the decarbonization of North and Baltic Sea shipping. Focus in the main project shall be laid on possible GHG emission abatement measures in short and medium distance shipping and their environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Possible co-benefits as well as negative impacts of new propulsion technologies and fuels shall also be investigated in the main project.
This seed money project will i) investigate the state of play in clean shipping in North and Baltic Seas, ii) compile the work plan of the main project, and iii) investigate funding possibilities for the main project. Of the UN sustainable development goals the main project will target specifically climate action, affordable and clean energy and industry innovation and infrastructure. In addition, decent work and economic growth and partnerships are touched upon because we plan to suggest also financing mechanisms for the decarbonization of maritime traffic. Also life below water and good health and wellbeing are promoted as emissions to water and air will be reduced. The main project may also touch upon education as we plan to describe the type of new jobs needed in maritime traffic and communicate this to educational institutes. HZG will mainly work on possible sources for funding but will also contribute to the other mentioned activities.
