Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Outstation at FRM II

Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht operates outstanding neutron scattering instruments at its outstation at the neutron source FRM II in Garching near Munich within the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ). At the small-angle scattering and reflectometry instrument REFSANS, measurements of solid samples as well as of the air-liquid interface are possible using a broad range of the scattering vector. Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht also contributes to the operation of the SANS-1 instrument at FRM II together with the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Furthermore, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and Technical University of Clausthal (TUC) are running projects to measure textures of materials at the residual stress and texture instrument STRESS-SPEC, operated by TUM and Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht/TUC.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Outstation at DESY

The outstation at DESY currently participates in the operation of four beamlines at the PETRA III synchrotron storage ring. The High Energy Material Science Beamline (HEMS) and the Imaging Beamline (IBL) are optimized for material science applications forming a unique research cluster. Due to the complementarity in their energy range and beam properties, the beamlines provide facilities for a large range of diffraction and imaging experiments to a widespread user community. In a joint collaboration with EMBL, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht also participates in the operation of the BioSAXS beamline. In collaboration with DESY and Kiel University, the outstation also operates the nanofocus endstation of the P03 beamline after the successful completion of the construction of the endstation within the BMBF project of Kiel University. In the future, the HARWI II beamline, which was operated by Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht at DORIS III, will be transfered to PETRA III as HARWI III. It is going to be dedicated for texture, strain and imaging measurements.

REFSANS has been designed as a reflectometer for measuring both specular reflectivity and evanescing small-angle neutron scattering from solid samples as well as from the air-liquid interface. more
