Traceable Measurements for Monitoring Critical Pollutants under the European Water Framework Directive

EMRP-ENV08

Project timeline
Start:
November 2011
Duration:
35 months
End:
September 2014
General Information
Providing comparable and traceable measurement results for the most important water pollutants in Europe is a requirement of the European Commission in order to assure high water quality related to the directives of the EU (e.g. Water Framework Directive WFD, QA/QC Directive, Drinking water directive). This can only be achieved by the provision of reference measurement standards, whenever possible traceable to the SI, which serve as reference points for the implementation of a traceability infrastructure supporting a monitoring network in Europe. The Project-Partners will develop and validate reference isotope dilution methods capable of analysing priority hazardous substances as specified in the WFD at the proposed low environmental quality standard (EQS) concentrations in the whole water body of ground and surface waters. The work will focus on three analytes (TBT, PBDE, PAH) for which an inventory of CEN/TC 230 – Water Analysis in 2004 has identified a serious lack of applicable standardised analytical methods.
A reference method for coastal water will be provided by HZG.
