The Magnesium Research Award was handed over to the recipient by the chairman of the Jury and Director of the Magensium Innovation Centre, Prof. Karl Ulrich Kainer (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht) at the 6th Int. Conference on Magnesium in Shenyang on 25th September. 2017.

Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li was nominated for the HZG Award for his landmark research in the field of “Atomic scale characterisation of the solute clustering and precipitation during the early stage of magnesium alloys containing rare earth elements”. Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li and his research partners at the Montanuniversität Leoben have employed advanced transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography to elucidate the solute clustering and precipitation sequences as well as the partitioning behaviour of solutes into precipitates in advanced magnesium alloys.

His pioneering work on Mg-Nd-Gd(Y)-Zn-Zr magnesium alloys have identified the relevant processing steps for these type of alloy systems to obtain maximum strength at satisfactory ductility. His fundamental work on the precipitation in Mg alloys is aimed to improve the application of Mg alloys in the automotive and aerospace industry.

Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li graduated at the Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China in 2006 in Materials Processing (MSc). In March 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Materials Processing at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China. From 2010 to 2014, he worked as university assistant at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria.

In July 2014, he got a permeant academic position as Senior Lecturer at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria. In September 2015, he achieved his habilitation in field of foundry technology at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria.
