Dr Tanya Abrahamse has for almost three decades played an acknowledged leadership role in key areas of South Africa’s socio-economic and political development - prior, during and after South Africa’s transition to democracy. Originally a natural scientist by training, she has been a policy and strategic leader in South Africa in the Development and Environmental sector; in Tourism and its evolution to a significant economic sector and in the Biodiversity, heritage and natural resources management sector.
She was a CEO of the SA National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), which sets the country’s biodiversity agenda and leads research and information provision for sound biodiversity decision making, and has successfully raised the profile of the sector and its centrality to SA’s social and economic goals. Since October 2017, she chairs the Governing board of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
She was on the transitional task team to form Future Earth, is a panel member of the International Resources Panel and sat on UN Secretary General’s Inaugural Science Advisory Board which aims to bring science to bear on the achievement of global sustainable development.
