Improved Damage Tolerance for Welded Fuselages

"Crenellations" increase lifetime of welded airplane fuselages.

Welded fuselage structures must meet high standards of damage tolerance. A high life time is required of such structures. Additionally, economic and weight saving solutions for light-weight structures are in demand. Applying so called “crenellations” to achieve a higher damage tolerance of thin walled structures turns out to be a successful solution with extraordinary potential. Systematic analyses in cooperation with ALCAN-France revealed that keeping constant the structural weight, an increase in lifetime of 90% - 150% under typical operational loads can be achieved.
