The department develops methods for the prediction of integrity and lifetime of engineering components subjected to quasi static and cycling loads. Analytical methods based on the classical fracture mechanics and numerical methods are considered. Aim of the work is the assessment of typical component systems and component groups, which are applied in the transport technology and light weight construction. The department operates a comprehensive mechanical test laboratory for material characterisation and for performing tests on component like specimens under uni-and multiaxial loading conditions in order to verify newly developed failure assessment methods.

Another work scope comprises identification and characterisation of microscopic deformation, damage, and fracture properties of metallic materials and its utilisation for failure assessment methods. Besides classical metalographic work, scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron x-ray tomography is used here. With the combination of micro-mechanical testing instrumentation and ion-beam based small specimen fabrication capabilities, the mechanical response of small–scale structures are comprehensively investigated. The work is concentrated on aluminium- and magnesium-alloys.
