The project “PIK-GGBase” is based on a long-standing collaboration between the neutron research centers Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute of National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute“ (PNPI NRC KI) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG).

As a scientific aid and in connection with the final shutdown of the research reactor FRG-1 in Geesthacht, the neutron beamlines of the former FRG-1 were transferred to Russia (PNPI NRC KI). The neutron beam lines include the small angle neutron scattering stations SANS-2 and SANS-3, the ultra-small angle scattering station DCD, the polarized neutron reflectometer NERO, the strain scanner ARES-2, the texture diffractometer TEX-2 and the polarized neutron diffractometer POLDI. Another instrument the time-of-flight Fourier spectrometer FSS has been transferred to Gatchina but will be installed at the IBR-2m research reactor in Dubna.

In the frame of the German-Russian collaboration „Ioffe-Röntgen-Institut“ HZG applied successfully for the German-Russian project „PIK-GGBase“ together with Russian partners of PNPI NRC KI in Gatchina. This project includes amongst others the adaption and further development/optimisation of the former FRG-1 instruments which were transferred from HZG to PNPI NRC KI to the needs of the PIK reactor. Furthermore, a training programme for Ph.D. students will be developed with the aim to educate instrument responsibles for the transferred instruments.
