Programme "Polar Regions and Coasts in a Changing Earth System" : PACES II
The polar and coastal regions both play a key role within the Earth system. The Arctic and Antarctic represent a very special environment, are home to a yet largely unknown biodiversity and exert a great influence on the global climate. The coastal and shallow seas are areas of most intense human activities and at the same time harbour most of the marine food resources. Both regions are subject to substantial environmental change due to human impact and climate change. During the period 2014 - 2018 the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht and the Alfred Wegener Institute will work together in PACES II to further our understanding of the polar regions and coasts in a changing Earth system and to provide the information necessary for society to manage the opportunities and risks associated with anthropogenic change.
