HZG PhD students in the laboratory

PhD education at the HZG Institute of Biomaterial Science

The Helmholtz Graduate School for Macromolecular Bioscience is a collaboration between the Institute of Biomaterial Science of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht in Teltow, the University of Potsdam, and the Freie Universität Berlin. Funded by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Graduate School offers outstanding interdisciplinary training for PhD students with a background in natural and biomaterial sciences as well as in engineering.

The PhD Program

The PhD program comprises fundamental and application-oriented scientific research with a strong focus on the entire chain of development of macromolecular and biomaterial science. The state of the art research facilities allow a unique combination of cutting edge research with outstanding modern technology in an internationally oriented environment.

The research topics of the synergetically organized curriculum include:

  • design, synthesis and processing of biomaterials
  • comprehensive testing for cell tolerance and toxicity
  • examination of interactions with physiological environments

Innovative quality standards are achieved by a structured course program with a broad variety of teaching lectures in the main research areas including the support of an interdisciplinary mentoring committee. The Graduate School provides scholarships and travel funding and offers a coordination office supporting the PhD students.
