Biomimetic materials aim to resemble the structure and function of biological materials. Our work is inspired by the extracellular matrix, which is of key importance in tissue growth and regeneration. We are especially interested in the chemical synthesis and structure of materials including their mechanical performance as well as their biological activity.
In many cases, we use biopolymer components of or derived from the extracellular matrix as starting points for the synthesis of biologically active materials with tailorable properties and functions. Furthermore, we work on biologically active peptides and peptidomimetics and their application in biomaterials. On the application side, we concentrate on material-induced regeneration in the musculoskeletal field and in ophthalmology.
