Study of the development of extreme events over permafrost areas

SODEEP

Project timeline
Start:
November 2018
Duration:
27 months
End:
January 2021
General Information
The aim of the SODEEP project is to investigate the impact of climate change over circum-Arctic permafrost areas and its variation across spatial scales. Especially, the project will consider the role of permafrost dynamics and related land-atmosphere feedbacks for the regional and global climate, and how this varies with a changing spatial resolution. By considering different scales, besides contributing to the relevant topic of upscaling process information to larger scales, the study would also add to our understanding of soil-atmosphere feedback under the dramatic land cover change conditions and its impact on the occurrence and development of extreme events in the high northern latitudes.
The following scientific questions will guide the SODEEP research: 1) Which processes and scales are relevant for the regional climate and which may have an impact on the global scale? 2) What is the role of extreme events and their impact on permafrost degradation? 3) How fast, how deep and to what temperature are permafrost soils going to thaw in the future?
SODEEP will use high-resolution numerical models both in global and regional climate as well as permafrost process-study simulations, verified with state-of-the art in situ and remote sensing observations.
Hereon is the coordinator of the project. SODEEP is funded in the frame of ERA.NET RUS Plus (‘Strengthening STI links between Russia and the European Research Area), which is an ERA-NET Cofund scheme of Horizon 2020 of the European Commission.
