ICCS 5 I 5. International Conference on Climate Services 28.02.-02.03.2017 I CApe town, south africa

The ICCS5 is organized by the Climate Services Partnership (CSP), supported by the CSP Secretariat at the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) and the University of Cape Town. This year, the ICCS5 focuses on ongoing activities and existing challenges in the developing countries, especially in Africa. The conference motto is innovation and capacity building.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports this conference in the framework of cooperation between Germany and Africa, in which the BMBF research programs SASSCAL and WASCAL are financed in particular.

Drought or flooding, fine dust pollution or heat: In different regions of the world, various challenges exist through the changing climate. It is therefore important to know the social, economic and cultural conditions of the different regions and to network with local and national stakeholders.

Climate services are the basis for many decisions dealing with the effects of the climate. They are therefore requirement for planning and implementing suitable adaptation measures in agriculture, water, health and other sectors. Climate services help authorities, politics, business and society to recognize and react to the risks and opportunities caused by climate change. Network formation and development or capacity building is therefore an important prerequisite for the implementation of climate services.

The conference will provide the participants with a suitable platform to discover new links to other programs and activities. They can thus initiate or further develop partnerships within the climate service community and beyond.

GERICS, a facility of the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht, develops scientifically based prototypical products and services to support decision-makers from politics, business and society in adapting to climate change.
