After more than 50 successful years, the FRG-1 research reactor at the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht was finally officially shut down at a celebratory colloquium on June 28, 2010. At the same time, GKSS founded the "German Engineering Materials Science Center" and thus continued its materials research with the help of neutron and synchrotron radiation at FRM-2 in Munich and at DESY in Hamburg. 1956 to 2006

In 2006, GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH celebrated its 50th anniversary.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the Gesellschaft für Kernenergieverwertung in Schiffbau und Schifffahrt (GKSS) looked back on a successful history of development, in the course of which Germany's first large-scale research facility became a modern, interdisciplinary scientific institution within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

In 2006, around 800 employees at the Geesthacht and Teltow sites near Berlin were engaged in national and international programs to find answers to pressing questions of the day - especially in the areas of energy conservation and resource protection.

Following the GKSS claim "knowledge creates use", they compiled scientific findings and used them to develop concrete utilization options for the present and the future. Later research activities at GKSS focused in particular on application-oriented and forward-looking fields of activity: coastal research and materials research.
