Climate Extremes and Impacts

Regional climate fluctuates in complex and varying ways. The “Climate Extremes and Impacts” department works toward understanding, reconstructing and predicting regional climate fluctuations and extremes. In doing so, the departmental considers time periods ranging from decades to millennia and takes into account different climate forcings, such as: changes in the Earth’s orbital parameters, the sun, volcanism as well as human influence on atmospheric composition. It is the aim of our research to understand climate change at different time scales and to estimate and reduce the various sources of uncertainly for predictions and reconstructions. Furthermore, the department studies the influence of climate and extremes on coastal areas and the coastlines of the past.
