Who we are

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is part of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization. The approximately 1,000 employees make substantial contributions to the clarification of major and pressing issues that focus on key scientific, economic and social issues.

The research spectrum includes high-performance materials for sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies, which are e.g. used in the fields of mobility and energy systems. In addition, pioneering biomaterials for medicine are developed. With the help of research and consultancy, the challenges of climate change are to be mastered and the management and protection of the coastal and marine environment made possible.

This comprises of 83 million euros in basic funding (90 percent federal, 10 percent shared by the federal states: Schleswig-Holstein around five percent, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg around two percent, Lower Saxony and Brandenburg one percent each) and a further 17 million euros from third-party funds that are raised. The Research Centre is located in Geesthacht, with offices and branch offices in Hamburg, Teltow, Berlin, Kiel and Garching near Munich.
