The Institute of Materials Research of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is looking to fill the position of a doctoral student (m/f/d) for the project Clean Sky: H2Free – Investigation and modelling of hydrogen effusion in electrochemically plated ultra-high-strength-steels used for landing gear structures. The position is initially limited for three years. Commencement date: January 1st, 2021. The place of employment is Geesthacht.

Your tasks

  • hydrogen effusion model development and implementation for (coated) UHSS materials
  • identification and calibration of model parameters in strong interaction with experimentalists of the project partners
  • analysis of simulation results by post-processing tools and contribution to processing and testing optimization
  • active collaboration and exchange with industrial so"ware developers
  • publication and presentation of your scientific results in consortia meetings, international scientific journals and at international conferences and workshops
  • contribution to project documentation

Your profile

  • master’s degree in Computational Engineering, Engineering Science, Materials Science and Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or Physics
  • demonstrated experiences in utilizing numerical simulation so"ware tools (COMSOL, FEniCS, ANSYS or similar)
  • excellent knowledge of relevant theoretical foundations (materials science, hydrogen embrittlement, diffusion and transport, coating technologies)
  • programming skills in C++, Python would be beneficial
  • commitment and passion for performing high-quality research for a topic dedicated to the highest level of safety in aircra" engineering
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists
