Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation within its German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS). At the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source, HZG operates the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS/P07; jointly with DESY), the Imaging Beamline (IBL, P05) and the Nanofocus Endstation of the Micro and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (MiNaXS, P03) along with supporting laboratories.

Recently, DESY and HZG have built the new beamline P61 for use with white X-ray beams. The HZG part of the new beamline (P61A) focuses on engineering materials research. Among others, experiments for residual stress analysis, spatially and time-resolved phase analysis, and high-speed radiography will be offered to users. The beamline starts user service in 2021.

Within this framework, we are looking for a postdoc (m/f/d) as instrument scientist at the new white-beam beamline P61A. The position will initially be limited to three years with the option for an extension. The place of employment is Hamburg.

Your tasks

  • operating the beamline as second beamline scientist
  • organizing and carrying out user and industrial service at the beamline
  • designing experiments and sample environments for in-situ experiments together with external cooperation partners and in-house researchers
  • developing software for specific data reduction and analysis
  • pursuing own scientific research in the field of engineering materials science within the scope of our R&D-program
  • publishing scientific results and presenting them at national and international conferences

Your profile

  • PhD in physics, materials science or a related discipline
  • experience with diffraction techniques, especially residual stress analysis (experience with white beam techniques will be beneficial)
  • experience with synchrotron beamline instrumentation and sample environments (experience with white beam techniques will be beneficial)
  • experience in materials science
  • programming skills in a high level computer language
  • capability of analysing large amounts of data
  • excellent communication skills
  • excellent English language skills; good German language skills
