The Institute of Coastal Research announces an open position for a natural scientist (PhD student) with a master degree in Meteorology, Physics or Chemistry or a similar natural science (e.g. Environmental Science or Environmental Informatics) limited for 36 months. You will be working in the department of Chemistry Transport Modeling within the project “Water from four sides” which is part of the Excellence Cluster „Climate, Climate Change and Society“ (CliCCS). The project will be conducted in close cooperation with Technical University of Hamburg and University of Hamburg. The place of employment is Geesthacht (Germany).

Your tasks will be:

  • modelling the impact of aerosol particles on cloud formation and precipitation
  • application of an urban traffic model for investigating the traffic contribution to emissions of aerosol particles
  • exemplary determination of the impact of climate change induced modifications of precipitation patterns on air quality in cities in different regions

Requirements:

  • Master degree (grade “good” or better) in one of the disciplines mentioned above
  • good knowledge in programming with R (or similar scripting language) as well as knowledge in working with unix operating systems
  • experience in the application of complex atmospheric or oceanic model systems or in traffic modeling
  • knowledge in atmospheric chemistry, especially related to aerosol particles is of advantage
  • good communication skills in German and English
