The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), starting June 1st, 2018, in the research project Digital Earth of the Helmholtz Association in the research field Earth and Environment. The position is limited to 3 years. The place of employment is Hamburg.

Digital Earth aims at advancing Earth system understanding through better integration of data and knowledge from the different Earth science disciplines and earth compartments. Natural scientists and data scientists work closely together to gain new insights from the ever-growing amount and variety of research data using novel concepts and methods. They are looking for solutions, in particular with regard to the processing of fast-growing, multi-parameter data through employing existing Data Science methods, adapting new algorithms and developing digital workflows tailored to specific scientific needs. Digital Earth integrates the competences of all eight Helmholtz Center of the research field Earth and Environment. More information about the project can be found at digitalearth.geomar.de.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • develop innovative digital workflows in order to employ new data science methods for data exploration such as deep learning algorithms and visualisation of 4-dimensional earth system data in support to climate service product development
  • develop and apply methods to integrate and explore earth system data across different spatial scales in support to the provision of local climate information
  • develop procederes to integrate hydro-meteorological data with ecological and socio-economic data for climate vulnerability assessments
  • exploration of hydro-meteorological extremes and human processes such as land surface modifications, river regulation, water use and infrastructure, and combined analysis of earth system observations and modelling data to assess climate risks and vulnerabilities
  • develop an evaluation framework and monitoring process for Digital Earth workflows and outputs for scientific use in close cooperation with the other Helmholtz Centers from research field Earth and Environment, and for practical applications in risk analyses and vulnerability assessments
  • representation of GERICS and Digital Earth at scientific conferences, workshops and meetings, but also in the area of societal relevant events; and compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings in related international peer-reviewed research journals

  • a university degree and Ph.D. in maths, informatics, physics, meteorology, or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential
  • extensive knowledge and experiences in data science methods and its application in climate science is essential
  • extensive experience in the analysis of 4-dimensional large data files from earth observations and from climate models is essential
  • experience in exploring hydro-meteorological extremes, in climate risk analyses and vulnerability assessments
  • experience in integrating observation and modelling data from different disciplines and earth compartments across different spatial scales
  • experiences in earth system and climate modelling would be beneficial
  • excellent knowledge of the programming language Python and experience with Jupyter Notebook, as well as working with Linux/Unix computer environments is essential
  • experience in communicating scientific results to scientists and stakeholders
  • experience in evaluation scientific workflows and outcomes
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English, as well as a record of peer reviewed publications in order to demonstrate the skill to publish the work in scientific journals
