The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), an institution of the HZG, is looking for a Researcher (m/f) to support the scientific cooperation with the University of Hamburg research group on Agricultural Economics and Resource Management within the research unit Sustainability and Global Change. The „Integrative Modelling Lab“ will work on the analysis of impacts of global change at the local and regional scale through the creation of integrative models. These models will include knowledge from different sources to support science-based decision making under the frame of „action-able science“. The position is limited to three years.The place of employment is Hamburg.

For our first integrative modelling, we have chosen to analyse the agricultural sector and the possible adaptation capabilities of the sector to contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction. Agriculture contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Particular important are the emissions of methane emissions from livestock, of nitrous oxide from fertilized fields, and of carbon dioxide from land use change. At the same time, agriculture can act as a sink for greenhouse gases through sequestration of carbon in soils or biomass and be an ideal adaptation “steward” when transforming the production to the future challenges climate change might posse to us. Unfortunately, the estimation of agricultural non-point source emissions and sequestration is relatively costly. Thus, despite increasing political demands for greenhouse gas emission reduction, there are very few actual regulations of agricultural GHG emissions.

The tasks related to this research position will be:

  • the management of the project in close collaboration with the principal investigators
  • scientific work within the project following the needs of the project's document of action
  • collaboration with other GERICS’ departments
  • writing of scientific publications
  • support the visibility of the project
  • support of the team work on the coupling of systems through system modeling approaches
  • support of the organisation of workshops and participatory processes for the team

Requirements are to:

  • have a PhD preferably in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Ecological Economics or similar background
  • have experience in the use of System Dynamic Modelling
  • have experience in modelling and programming
  • have experience in participatory processes and stakeholder dialogues
  • have scientific publication in the intersection of science and use of science
  • be highly motivated, proactive, self-reliant, assertive, with an excellent time-management
  • be able to work interdisciplinary connecting the work of different disciplines
  • be proficient in English and German
