The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research, invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), starting January 1st, 2018, as part of its WCRP CORDEX activities. The position is limited to 2 years. The place of employment is Hamburg.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • contribute to the international CORDEX-CORE activity by conducting high-resolution simulations with the regional climate model REMO
  • process simulation data for follow-up impact studies and transfer data to the CORDEX data archive
  • develop and apply novel analysis methods for, e.g., regional multi-model multi-domain ensembles
  • contribute thematically and technically to the prototype product development at GERICS
  • compile scientific and technical publications of the findings of the different areas in related international peer-reviewed research journals

Profile of qualifications:

  • a university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential. A Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline would be beneficial
  • extensive experience in conducting (regional) climate model simulations on high performance computing systems
  • experience with the analysis of data sets from climate models. Excellent knowledge of the programming language Python, command languages such as bash and suitable tools such as the climate data operators (cdo). Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Fortran and R and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments
  • experience in communicating scientific results to scientists and stakeholders
  • experience in contributing (scientifically and organizationally) to international scientific projects and networks such as CORDEX
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Communication skills in German would be beneficial
  • willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team at the Climate Service Center Germany. Interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes is expected as the focus of our center is on the provision of decision making knowledge
