The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a 36-month Postdoc Position (m/f) within the project Reduced Complexity Models, which is part of the recently launched research initiative in Information and Data Science of the Helmholtz Society. The place of employment is Geesthacht.
This new project, a collaborative effort among a total of eight large institutions belonging to the German Helmholtz and Max-Planck Societies, aims at the exploration, design and application of efficient and realistic models of reduced complexity that may act as surrogate of very complex models that are used in the areas of climate, plasma physics and health research among others. Within this project a strong cross-breeding among different disciplines is expected to open new avenues of research leading to innovative approaches within each discipline.
The contribution of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to the project is focused on the design of mathematical and statistical models of reduced complexity that can be applied in the area of climate research, specifically targeting the reconstruction of past climates combining information from proxy records and climate simulations. However, a strong interaction with techniques applied by other project partners will be an essential part of the project, involving for instance methods of image pattern recognition and identification of the relevant mathematical subspaces, among others. In addition the successful candidate will be deeply involved in presentation of results at workshops and conferences and preparation of scientific publications for international peer-reviewed journals.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht expects candidates to have completed a Ph.D. in mathematics or physics, or an equivalent degree with a solid mathematical background, and with a very strong interest in applied mathematics and statistics. The candidate will ideally have experience with the processing of large data sets using UNIX/Linux platforms and programming languages (e.g. Matlab, R, FOTRAN), preferentially in the context of super computing environments. A good publication record in international journals is a clear advantage. Previous experience with the analysis of climate simulations, though not strictly required, will be a clear asset.
