When it comes to equal opportunities, ensuring a compatibility between family and professional life is a major factor. This is why the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht provides a range of schemes designed to help younger members of staff — both women and men — to coordinate family and career.

Rigid working hours poorly suited to employees needs are a major stumbling block in the way of a better compatibility between work and family/private life.
For this reason, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht had already reached an in-house agreement on more flexible working hours back in 1999, with the aim of giving employees greater freedom to tailor their time at work to the demands of home life.

And the introduction of opportunities to telework — the subject of an in-house agreement in 2002 — also is designed to increase the compatibility of professional and private life for employees.

Ensuring the compatibility of family and professional life also means being able to offer fast and unbureaucratic help to employees with childcare problems. To this end, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht has organised cooperation with a hotline agency that will source care for children as well as elderly dependents in need of help.
