Title

MERIS-Based Assessment of Carbon Supply into the Arctic by River RunOff

Acronym

MACRO

General Information
The flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from major rivers into the coastal waters of Siberia (Kara Sea) will be estimated from time series of ENVISAT/MERIS data. For that purpose algorithms will be adapted and optimized to determine gelbstoff, find the conversion between DOC and gelbstoff absorption and solve the problem of cloud interpolation for that area. Furthermore the biomass of phytoplankton and the transport of suspended solids into the coastal waters will be estimated. Expected major deliverables are: Quantified (i) fluxes of DOC into the Kara Sea from the major estuaries, (ii) pool of DOC in the Kara Sea (iii) fluxes of DOC out of the Kara Sea into the open Arctic regions. The role of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is to give support in the development of algorithms and processing of data.
