Schools Lab Quantensprung: For ten years the facility has been filling the pupils with enthusiasm for science and technology

The Helmholtz-Centre Geesthacht opened the Schools Laboratory Quantensprung on the site of the research centre in 2002. Since then, pupils especially from Northern Germany have been able to get close to science and research. Due to the great success a second lab room was established in 2009, so that the three teachers of the schools laboratory can give approximately 175 classes p.a. Since 2002 more than 35,000 pupils and 2,800 teachers have visited the experimental days on the topics 'fuel cell' and 'water analysis'.
The guest from the Ministry of Education and Culture Issues of Schleswig-Holstein congratulated at the commemorative event on the occasion of the schools laboratory's 10th birthday. State Secretary Dirk Loßbach: "Last but not least this event shows that the school laboratory Quantensprung played a leading role. Today it is an important institution in the educational landscape of Schleswig-Holstein."
The Scientific Director of the Helmholtz-Centre Geesthacht, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kaysser, handed over the present of the centre to the schools laboratory's head Michael Buchsteiner: A „crank machine“, with which the pupils can produce electricity through muscular strength. The faster the crank gets turned, the brighter the lamps glow and illustrate the power generation.

Kaysser: „The new device points up the connection between generation and production of electricity playfully, in this way pupils can get into the fascination of science and research. For example, the school classes learn on their visits in our centre more about current research themes, like 'hydrogen technology' or 'light weight construction'.“
At the event, the potential of the educational institutions out-of-school was examined in two lectures: Prof. Dr. Rolf Hempelmann, Chairman of LernortLabor, the federal association of schools laboratories as well as Lutz Jäger, teacher's organization MNU, association for the promotion of mathematical and natural scientific teaching, provided detailed information on the position and the potential of the schools labortories in Germany.
Northern German pupils often in Geesthacht
Besides the classes, the schools laboratory offers the possibilty to the teacher's further education regularly. Physics and chemistry trainee teachers learn under guidance of the Quantensprung teachers how to shape their technical-natural scientific lessons.
The largest financial contribution to the personnel and current costs are being made by the Helmholtz-Centre. The Ministry of Education and Culture Issues of Schleswig-Holstein bears the costs of one chemistry teacher. On two days a week he trades his class room at the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium in Geesthacht for the Schools Laboratory Quantensprung. The attendance at the schools laboratory and the bus transfer are free of charge for the participating classes.
