German-Chinese Cooperation for the Development of Biomaterials launched

Today, the cooperation agreement between the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht and the Chinese Tianjin University for the future cooperation of the two institutions has been signed in Teltow, Germany by Prof Dr Wolfgang Kaysser, scientific director of GKSS, and Prof Dr Gong Ke, president of Tianjin University. This cooperation aims at intensifying the development of innovative material for regenerative medicine. Here, the commonly lead "Tianjin University – GKSS Joint Laboratory for Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine" is a basic element of this cooperation.

Last week, the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico reached the US coast and is threatening to become one of the biggest oil accidents ever. To respond swiftly in the event of a pollutant accident, precautionary planning by the Coast Guard is essential. For the precautionary planning in respect of the Northern German Wadden Sea, coastal researchers at the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht developed the Sensitivity Grid North German Sea Coast II, which shows the different sensitivity of coastal areas and river estuaries depending on season.

Today scientists at the Centre of Scientific Diving of the Biological Institute Helgoland start a project that is unique thus far for the North Sea: “MarGate”, an innovative underwater experimental field. “MarGate” is part of the COSYNA oceanographic research infrastructure coordinated by the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht and financed within the research field “Earth and Environment” of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.
