This activity comprises characterization and safety assessment of mechanically loaded components composed of single or and multi-materials for application in aerospace, marine and automotive. Goal is the development of methods for assessing structure the integrity of components or subcomponents over the whole life time. Guidelines shall be worked out for design rules, manufacturing, quality control and non-destructive inspections and for decisions on replacement, repair or other measures for continued safe operation.

Assessment of the integrity of light-weight structures made up of same or different materials by using different manufacturing technologies, requires a thorough understanding and quantitative description of their deformation damage and fracture behavior. Developed phenomenological and micromechanical models as well as statistical models will provide novel method and procedures for characterizing material and structures. The results are applied in current industrial projects and are flowing into the standardization of novel procedures for characterizing materials and lightweight structures.
