Methods
A portfolio of methods is available to test cytocompatibility and biofunctionality of recently developed polymers.
- For general cytocompatibility testing L929 mouse fibroblasts are used whereas primary cell cultures are used for specific cytocompatibility tests (e.g. bone marrow cells, monocytes, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells) according to standards DIN ISO 10993 (MTS proliferation assay, LDH assay, CAM test). Not only statical but also dynamical test systems are applied with 2D or 3D cell culture models.
- Polymers designed to be used in contact to blood are tested for their hemocompatibility. Whole blood or blood components are assayed for the activation of platelets, of the coagulation cascade and of the complement and the fibrinolytic systems after contact of the polymer surfaces with whole blood/blood components.
