Biocompatibility
The evaluation of biocompatible (tissue and hemo compatible) polymer systems – resorbable implant materials and biostable materials for extra corporal applications, respectively – are important working fields of the department. These materials have a high potential for application as scaffold and carrier materials for Tissue Engineering or as components of bioreactor systems for organ assist or cultivation of special cells. Therefore they are important components of systems that are going to be used in the Regenerative Medicine.
Besides biological and biochemical questions concerning biocompatibility of the materials used, the colonisation of implants with cells and the angiogenesis in engineered tissues are investigated. This research is directed to Tissue Engineering of blood vessels, intestinal and stomach wall as well as the development of innovative surgical devices like sutures.
