Centre for Membranes and Structured Materials

In the Centre for Membranes and Structured Materials we work on the following topics:

  • Design and synthesis of tailor-made polymers for specific membrane-based separation processes and structural applications in lightweight construction

  • Fundamental research to develop self-assembling membranes based on block copolymers for medical and environmental technology, "switchable" membranes

  • Development and production of membranes for gas and liquid separation

  • The design of membrane-based separation processes, including module development to the operation of test devices up to pilot plant scale

  • New nano-composite materials with improved mechanical stability for lightweight applications

The Centre for Membranes and Structured Materials has state of the art equipment for synthesis, characterisation and processing of polymers as well as the production of membranes and membrane characterisation.

The research is beeing conducted in the following departments:

Polymer Synthesis

Nanostructured Materials

Mechanical and Morphological Characterisation

Polymer Technology

Nanochemistry and Nanoengineering

The research activities at the Institute for Polymer Research in Geesthacht are embedded in the Helmholtz research field "Key Technologies". In the program "Advanced Engineering Materials" we work in the area "Functionalised Materials" with the following priorities:

Functionalised Nanostructured Polymer Materials

Polymer Materials for Membrane based Processes
