Profile

The German Engineering Material Science Centre (GEMS) is the central user platform of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht with a world-wide singular infrastructure for the complementary research with photons and neutrons. Instruments, which use synchrotron radiation, are operated at the outstation of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht at DESY in Hamburg , instruments, which use neutrons, are operated at the outstation of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht at FRM II in Garching near Munich.

As part of the Institute for materials research, Institute part of material physics, GEMS is an important center for the use of photons and neutrons in materials research.

GEMS replaces the Geesthacht Neutron Facility(GeNF) after the shut down of the FRG-1 at the end of June 2010.
