Third party funding

The HGF funded Virtual Institute "Improving Performance and Productivity of Integral Structures through Fundamental Understanding of Metallurgical Reactions in Metallic Joints" (VI-IPSUS) is dedicated to improve the performance and productivity of integral structures through fundamental understanding of metallurgical reactions in metallic joints. In this context a special friction stir welding device was developed at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht  for in situ diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments using high energy synchrotron radiation for the observation of the formation of residual stresses and precipitates during the welding process.

Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht contributes to the programme "Neutron and Muon Integrated Infrastructure Initiative", NMI3 of the EU to offer scientists of other EU countries financial support for travel and accommodation to perform measurements at our GEMS instruments at the FRM II in Garching.
