Nanotechnology

Because of their extremely fine microstructure, nanostructured materials possess exceptional mechanical and functional properties. Furthermore they allow for combinations of properties, e.g. for applications in the transport and energy sector. In hydrogen storage materials nanostructuring facilitates much faster hydrogen uptake and release than in case of the corresponding coarse grained materials. Nanostructured multi layers are preferred to "bulk" coating systems because of their improved mechanical or special optical properties.
The "hydrogen storage materials" group is working on the development of materials with very high storage capacity, reduced reaction enthalpy and faster reaction kinetics at working temperatures suitable for fuel cells.
The "coating technology" group focuses on the development of corrosion resistant coatings and nanostructured synchrotron optics.
