Profile

Dr. Dietmar Letzig is head of the department Wrought Magnesium Alloys.

Comprehensive knowledge on the deformation behaviour and mechanical properties as well as microstructure and texture of wrought magnesium alloys is a prerequisite for the industrial utilisation of semi-finished products such as sheets, forgings or extruded profiles. The work of the department is therefore concerned with establishing the fundamental relationships between alloy composition and deformation behaviour on the one hand, as well as between processing methods and the resulting mechanical properties on the other hand. The main focus of the investigations is placed on the optimisation of the processing parameters for twin-roll casting, rolling, forging and extrusion in order to provide semi-finished products having suitable properties for final finishing processes such as, e.g., deep drawing.

The main topics of the research work are as follows:

• Alloy development for rolling, extrusion and forging applications
• Thermomechanical processing investigations –twin-roll casting, rolling extrusion and forging behaviour
• Microstructure and texture design of semi-finished products and component parts
• Analysis of the deformation and recrystallisation mechanisms in wrought Mg alloys
• Implementation of the twin-roll casting process for Mg alloys
