The Integrated Approach of COSYNA

Principle of the Integrated ApproachPrinciple of the Integrated Approach

One of the main characteristics of COSYNA will be the combination of in situ observations, remote sensing and modelling.

The integrated system that is under under development will lead to a major extension of the existing data of the Southern North Sea, especially in the context of chemical and biological data.

In combination with numerical models it will build an essential basis for the research in the Institute for Coastal Research in the next decade.

This comprises:

  • to analyse the environmental state continuously by data assimilation with models
  • to gain a much better knowledge of ecosystem processes
  • to be the basis for an integrated ecosystem model
  • to identify and forecast long-term effects of climate change on abiotic and biological processes in the coastal region
  • to gain necessary information on ecoloical processes for coastal management
