MARCOPOLI-Atlas „Observing the coastal sea“ is out

Marcopoli Titel

Within the framework of the HGF MARCOPOLI research programme of GKSS and AWI, one of the themes is the development of new observational techniques and information processing and assessment procedures for coastal waters. With this atlas results of this programme are presented and it is demonstrated how the new techniques are applied.

Special issue on COSMO-CLM published

Meteorologische Zeitschrift published a special issue on the design, performance and usage of the regional atmospheric model COSMO-CLM, which serves in Germany as community model for regional climate simulations (the consortium has over 70 members in over 21 institutions). This issue (volume 17/4) has been edited by Burkhardt Rockel (GKSS), Andreas Will (TU Cottbus) and Andreas Hense (University Bonn) - with the result of 15 articles, of which three document work done at GKSS, on the simulation of polar lows, typhoons and the climate a different regions:
- Zahn, M., and H. von Storch, 2008: Tracking Polar Lows in CLM, Meteor. Z. 17: 445-453
- Feser, F.,and H. von Storch, 2008: Regional modelling of the western Pacific typhoon season 2004, Meteor. Z. 17, 519-528 --Rockel, B., and B. Geyer, 2008: The performance of the regional climate model CLM in different climate regions, based on the example of precipitation. Meteor. Z. 17: 487-498
Hans von Storch is since many years a member of the advisory board of Meteorologische Zeitschrift.

Mathematical drift modelling allows for a better interpretation of the number of beached oil-contaminated sea birds at the German North Sea coast in terms of illegal oil pollution

Using hydrodynamic transport modelling, the impact of wind conditions on the occurrence of oil-contaminated bird corpses could successfully be quantified. To some extent, annual variations in the monitoring data could be ascribed to changing weather conditions. Any discharge of oil into the North Sea is prohibited. However, oil-contaminated bird corpses are found frequently along the North Sea coasts. In most of the cases they are victims of chronic oil pollution - a permanent form of marine pollution originating from ships. To a large extent, the number of collected bird corpses depends on prevailing wind conditions. This makes an appropriate interpretation of the survey data difficult. Using a transport model based on hydrodynamic simulations from the data base coastDat (www.coastdat.de), the changing impact of wind conditions becomes assessable.
